George Ford Jr. (1905) & Ida Bell Thompson-Ford (1907)

George Ford Jr.

On February 4th of 1906, George Ford, Jr. (Uncle Bigman) was the 2nd child born of George and Victoria Ford. He married Ida Bell Thompson and from this union eight children were born: George Leon, Samuel Allen, Travis, Lovie Jewell, Euvon Nell, Milton Ray, and Ruby Lee.

Ida Bell Thompson-Ford was born on April 4, 1907, and lived to be 98 years old. She passed away on March 28, 2006, but not without leaving a legacy. She was recognized as an Historian and one of the oldest citizens in the Brazos Valley, where her picture was on display at the George Bush Presidential Library for over a year. Even in death, she is still honored. Presently, her picture and biography is a part of the Brazos Valley African American Museum in Bryan, Teaxas.

During our research we learned that Uncle Bigman was notorious for praying over the evening dinner until the food got cold. And sometimes, he would pray, fall asleep then wakeup and pray again.

During the years of 1942-1944, Uncle Bigman moved his family to Vancouver, Washington to work on the shipyards. After the shipyards closed, he worked as a farmer in Brazos County raising cotton, corn peas, watermelon, and sweet potatoes. He was very active at Roans Chapel. He was Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the Deacon Board, teacher of the Men's Sunday School class, and was member of the choir.

At the time of his death on October 7, 1994, George Ford Jr.'s legacy was continuing to live on. He had a total of 32 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
